WITH PERFORMANCE STATUS OF BREAST CANCER  PATIENTS
AT DR. SARDJITO HOSPITAL YOGYAKARTA

ABSTRACT

Background: Prognosis and therapy for breast cancer are not only based on tumor characteristics, but also on the condition of patients. Some studies on prognostic factor show that patients with diverse tumor growth have different capacity for activities. Capacity of patients to do physical activities is reflected in performance status. Previous studies identified physical factors affecting performance status of cancer patients. However, there may be psychological factors such as self-esteem that is associated with performance status of cancer patients particularly breast cancer.
Objective: To identify association between self-esteem and performance status of breast cancer patients at Dr. Sardjito Hospital.
Method: This descriptive analytic study used quantitative method and cross sectional design undertaken at Tulip Integrated Cancer Installation of Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta from October to December 2009. Subject of the study consisted of 58 people purposively chosen. Self-esteem was measured using modified self-esteem inventory developed by Coopersmith and performance status was measured using Karnofsky Performance Status Scale. Data analysis used Spearman's Rho.
Result: The result of the study showed the majority of breast cancer patients had medium self-esteem (62.1%) and good performance status (82.8%). The result of correlation analysis showed that there was positive association at weak category between self-esteem and performance status of breast cancer patients (p=0.036 and r=0.276).
Conclusion: There was positive association at weak category between self-esteem and performance status of breast cancer patients at Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta.
